Commissioned and premiered by the Symphonieorchester Vorarlberg and the Jazzorchester Vorarlberg at the Montforthaus Feldkirch and at the Festspielhaus Bregenz (24th - 26th of November 2017). Conducted by Adrian Prabava.

Work Description (English)

“This symphony is inspired by a poem of Charles Bukowski, entitled »And The Moon And The Stars And The World«. The mood gradually evolves line by line resulting in a zoom like effect. The flavorful wording of each verse; this all structures and colors the composition. Here sits both, a symphonic orchestra and a jazz orchestra in the same piece, not opposite but rather melting together forming one single orchestra. Here you find yourself in a color rich environment where an enormous dynamic develops into the story which is to be told. I wanted to create a musical landscape, where the composition would contain delicate interwoven layers of finely balanced sounds but then in the next moment, it would be able to groove and swing. Where at some points the wild music may dominate like a riot, it would also migrate and break off into smaller combinations containing playful, atmospheric, poetic and dramatic elements. In order to do this, it was important for me to have access to such a diverse sound pallet. The audience will now be exposed to these various ensemble pairings and soloistic moments but those fade and transition back to the use of the full orchestra, where its beauty and power are unleashed onto the listener.”

"In dieser Symphonie nehme ich Bezug auf das gleich lautende Gedicht von Charles Bukowski. Die Stimmung, die allmähliche Zuspitzung von Zeile zu Zeile und der daraus resultierende Zoom-Effekt, der spezielle Geschmack jedes Verses, all dies strukturiert und färbt diese Komposition mit. Dabei stehen sich das Jazzorchester und das Symphonieorchester in diesem Werk nicht gegenüber, sondern verschmelzen vielmehr zu einem einzigen imposanten Klangkörper, welcher sich farbenreich entfaltet, eine ungeheure Dynamik entwickelt und zum Geschichtenerzähler wird. Ich wollte ein klangliches Universum schaffen, in dem es in einem Moment swingt und groovt, doch im nächsten schieben sich fein austarierte Klangebenen ineinander. Dann wieder dominiert wilde Musizierlust, es entstehen Tumulte, aber auch verspielt Kleinteiliges und Atmosphärisches, poetisch oder dramatisch. Dazu nutze ich verschiedene Kombinationen innerhalb dieses vielseitigen Klangapparates, welche mal kleine Ensemble-Konstellationen und improvisierende Solisten hervor treten lassen, mal die volle Wucht des Gesamtklanges und symphonischer Strukturen entfesseln."
