Concertino for Percussion Ensemble and Orchestra (2018)

Commissioned by the South Tyrolean Artists Association. Recorded and premiered by the “Tiroler Kammerorchester InnStrumenti” at the Haus der Musik Innsbruck, at the Kurhaus Meran and at the Kulturhaus Dornbirn (23th - 25th of November 2018). Conducted by Gerhard Sammer. Soloists: Simon Aschenwald, Matthias Brandt, Jonas Zink, Jeremias Zöhrer.

WORK DESCRIPTION (ENGLISH)

“Flying psychedelic fish heads, arranged in the shape of sun rays was the original picture I had in my mind when I composed this concertino. Rhythmic structures, unfolding patterns and sudden sounds were perfect elements needed to turn this image into music, in a way only a percussion ensemble is capable of.
On one hand this is accomplished through the communication of the soloists and orchestra. On the other hand through the interweaving of different positions and combinations it leads to the creation of a multidimensional soundscape.
I wanted to forge together single nondescript elements in order to generate moments of ecstasy which get deconstructed and broken down to their fused core.
»Deconstructed Ecstasy« is an exploration of energy from an electric field of rhythm, line, dynamic and tone color.”

Work Description (german)

„Fliegende psychedelische Fischköpfe, wie Sonnenstrahlen angeordnet, waren das ursprüngliche Bild in meinem Kopf als ich dieses Concertino komponiert habe. Rhythmische Strukturen, sich entfaltende Muster und unerwartete Klangeffekte, wie sie nur ein Schlagzeugensemble erzeugen kann, sind wie geschaffen dieses Bild in Musik zu verwandeln. Vollzogen wird dies einerseits durch die Kommunikation zwischen Solisten und Orchester, andererseits durch die Verflechtung unterschiedlicher Positionen zu einem multidimensionalen Zusammenklang. Dabei wollte ich einzelne unscheinbare Elemente zusammenschmieden und dadurch ekstatische Momente generieren, welche dann rekonstruiert und auf ihren verschmolzenen Kern herunter gebrochen werden. »Deconstructed Ecstasy« ist ein Ausloten von Energie im Spannungsfeld von Rhythmus, Linie, Dynamik und Klangfarbe.“
